Workplace Health & Safety - Management of Respirable Crystalline Silica in Quarries

CCAA with the support of its members has developed the 'Workplace Health & Safety Guideline - Management of Respirable Crystalline Silica in Quarries'.

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance to quarry operators regarding the appropriate assessment and control of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in Australian quarries.

Ensuring the health and safety of workers and contractors is fundamental to the heavy construction materials industry. While not all quarries and not all processes will lead to exposure to RCS, CCAA and its members are conscious of the need to ensure our industry continues to proactively manage the hazard.

The scope of this guideline is directed towards occupational exposures to RCS and community members can be reassured that if the risk to workers is controlled effectively, then the likelihood of community exposure will also be managed.

A Toolbox Talk for Engaging Workers, and a One-Page Summary are also available, as supporting materials.

CCAA has also re-published a related Data Sheet "Working Safely with Dry Concrete".

All documents are available for download here and together provide operators with guidance on:
- How to work safely with Dry Concrete
- Work health and safety obligations relevant to RCS
- The risk management framework
- Controlling the risk and examples of known controls
- Responsibilities when undertaking personal exposure monitoring and health monitoring
- Employee consultation, education and training
- Links to videos and other useful resources.

Breathe Freely Australia (BFA) is an initiative of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists in conjunction with the British Occupational Hygiene Society.
Together in collaboration with CCAA, industry and government, BFA have produced a series of documents to support the management of RCS in quarries.

These documents include:

  • Manager Toolkits - General Introduction, Legislation; Hazards, Risks & Controls; and Exposure Monitoring, Training & Medical Surveillance.
  • Guides & Factsheets - Health Matters; and Protecting Workers Health in Quarrying.
  • Management Standards.
