The peak body representing Australia’s heavy construction materials industry, Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA), has welcomed the South Australian Government’s State Budget support for new housing supply, and calls on the Government to fast track the protection of local quarries to ensure the affordable supply of construction materials for these building initiatives.
CCAA CEO Ken Slattery said the sector would continue to be called on as a key partner in the delivery of signature initiatives, in particular the $475 million Housing Package announced, and that effective supply continues to rely on quarries being located close to the points of delivery. “Affordable and timely supply of construction materials from our local quarries, concrete plants and cement facilities will be key in supporting the new home builds and the supporting infrastructure to create 25000 blocks of residential land earmarked across Adelaide’s northern and southern suburbs” Mr Slattery said.
CCAA State Director South Australia, Jason Kuchel, said the affordable supply of construction materials will remain vital in delivering the government’s plan for A Better Housing Future which is estimated to directly support the building of around 3600 homes over the next five years.
A new home build requires an average of about 110 tonnes of crushed rock and 53m3 of concrete, and local supply is critical to support the Government’s goal of more affordable housing and estate development infrastructure.
“The vision for A Better Housing Future outlined in the SA Budget will rely on the timely supply of locally sourced materials for housing estate preparation and construction of new homes in local communities” Mr Kuchel said.
