Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) has advocated for the development of a South Australian Heavy Construction Materials Plan, to provide for the sustainable and affordable supply of materials to meet the extraordinary growing demand in South Australia.
In releasing its policy position, CCAA has called on the South Australian Government to develop the plan to enable the sustainable supply of cement, concrete, aggregates and sand. Materials that are essential building blocks to the South Australia’s construction industry, an industry that employs 70,000 workers and contributes 45% of South Australia’s taxation revenue base.
Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia is the voice of the heavy construction materials industry in Australia. CCAA members produce the majority of Australia’s cement, concrete, and aggregates, which are crucial to the Australian and South Australian building and construction sectors. These materials support the development of our nation’s transport, energy, water, housing, defence, and social infrastructure. The industry generates approximately $15 Billion in annual revenues and employs approximately 30,000 Australians directly and a further 80,000 indirectly.
“CCAA has called on the South Australian government to expedite the development of a Heavy Construction Materials Plan to fuel the extraordinary growth of the state, and deliver on the essential housing, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects outlined in the June budget”, said CCAA CEO Michael Kilgariff.
“This plan is critical in the protection of local quarries, to enable an adequate supply of essential materials to the locations where they are needed.
“It is imperative that the State government develop a plan to ensure the efficient and affordable supply of construction materials, focused on timely delivery and aimed at making housing, renewable energy projects and infrastructure most affordable.
“CCAA looks forward to working with the South Australian Government and other stakeholders to develop a Heavy Construction Materials Plan that supports delivery of the major projects pipeline.
Major South Australian budgeted projects that require heavy construction materials include:
• The $843.6 million housing package – requiring over half a million tonnes of aggregates and more than 53 cubic meters of concrete per home.
• The $15.4 billion Torrens to Darlington project – to use nearly 1.1 million cubic meters of concrete, the largest amount ever used on a single project in SA.
• The new $3.2 billion Women’s and Children’s hospital – needing 84,000 cubic meters of concrete, alongside a $498 million upgrade and expansion of the Flinders Medical Centre.
• Renewable energy projects – with the foundation of a single wind tower pylon requiring up to 1000 cubic meters of concrete.
